This is an updated version of Five crashes later, originally published in 1988 in UK, and in 1992 for the french version Et Cinq de Chute (out of print). Readers will be interested to see that four new chapters fill up this second english publication, with 12 new photographs. An epilogue have been added to the original book. The first four chapters cover the initial pilot training of Derek Leyland Stevenson including, alas, his first crash, hence the title (picture of the cover).

Derek Stevenson, a relation of Robert Louis Stevenson, joined 175 Squadron in 1942 and spent the next free years fighting on Hurricane and Typhoon. Shot down or after self errors, he survived miraculously at six crashes in England, Majorca, Normandy and Germany. Himself has’nt hit any enemy in the air!

An incredible but veracious fighter pilot’s carreer.
